The Microbiology Laboratory operates a robust Quality Management System (QMS) and is accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
With operations across four accredited sites—Bweyogerere, Gulu, Mbale, and Mbarara—the laboratory provides reliable and consistent microbiological testing services.
The laboratory specializes in the detection and enumeration of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms in food, feed, water, cosmetics, and other consumer products. Through these services, it supports manufacturers and other regulatory bodies in ensuring products are produced under hygienic conditions and are safe for consumption.
A wide range of microbiological tests is offered, including total plate count, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, yeasts and moulds, Vibrio cholerae, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Candida albicans, sulphite-reducing anaerobes, and Clostridium perfringens. Testing is conducted using both conventional microbiological methods and advanced molecular biology techniques (RT qPCR).
In addition, the laboratory provides specialized services such as microbial cleanliness testing, antibacterial activity testing, bactericidal efficacy testing, and environmental monitoring for pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.
The laboratory analyses a diverse range of products, including cereals, dairy products, meat, fish, honey, fruits, vegetables, beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), water, tea, coffee, cosmetics, sanitizers, disinfectants, facemasks, surgical gowns, clean air suits, toilet paper, diapers, sanitary towels, fertilizers, and other related products.
Furthermore, the laboratory organizes and coordinates an Inter-Laboratory Comparison (ILC) scheme for laboratories recognized by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards, supporting continuous quality improvement and competence across the sector.
