The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is strengthening monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to ensure paint on the Ugandan market complies with national standards, in line with its mandate of consumer protection.

This mandate includes the formulation and promotion of standards; enforcement to protect public health, safety, and the environment from dangerous and substandard products; ensuring fairness in trade and precision in industry through reliable measurement systems; and strengthening Uganda’s economy by assuring the quality of locally manufactured products to enhance competitiveness in regional and international markets.

A key requirement as oer the Uganda and East Africa Standard is that lead content in paint must not exceed 90 parts per million.

UNBS, in collaboration with the Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP), is hosting a 2-day Lead Paint Conformity Assessment Workshop at Standards House, Bweyogerere.

LEEP is a partner of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint. It conducts paint studies to obtain country-specific data, supports governments in implementing lead paint regulations and provides technical assistance to help paint manufacturers switch to lead-free
