Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has today awarded certificates of recognition to ISO 22000, HACCP and Good Manufacturing and Hygienic Practices (GMP/GHP) certified companies in a ceremony aimed at recognizing the efforts of the companies who are using international standards to ensure consumers’ safety while enhancing competitiveness of local products and exports in regional and international markets. The management systems implemented by these certified companies have improved their efficiency, effectiveness and customer satisfaction.

The ceremony coincides with preparations for the World Food Safety Day which is organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and is celebrated every year on 07th of June, throught the world demonstrating that food safety is “everyone’s business”, it’s a collective right and responsibility – everyone needs to play their part. According to FAO/WHO food can become contaminated with a range of hazards including bacteria, chemicals, fungi or parasites, which can cause at least 200 different diseases. These illnesses impact health, livelihoods, education and economies and can be prevented - when we are informed and act.

Among the companies recognized today are various sectors categorized into 4 major categories. Agriculture (Animal and Plant farming), Manufacturing, Restaurants, Hotels and Catering Services Industry and Export of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables. Attached is a list of certified companies.

UNBS is accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to provide ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Systems and ISO 9001 Quality management system certification. Certificates issued by UNBS are internationally recognized and traceable to the global database (IAF CertSearch https://www.iafcertsearch.org/) of accredited certifications that allows users to verify the validity and authenticity of certificates.

ISO 22000, HACCP and other food safety global standards play a critical role in ensuring that food products are safe to eat, reducing the risks of contamination and foodborne illnesses globally.  These standards set requirements for food safety management, providing organizations with the tools to identify and control food safety hazards. Food safety is an essential concern for governments, businesses, and consumers worldwide, and applies to all persons and processes involved in the food value chain “from farm to fork”.

As food safety becomes increasingly important in international trade, ISO 22000 serves as a trusted benchmark for food safety practices. Organizations that are certified to global food safety standards are better positioned to access global markets and build trust with international customers.

Certification to international standards with UNBS promotes Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) Policy there by promoting import substitution, market access and increased competitiveness of our goods and services. It also serves as a pre-qualification tool in the supply of goods and services to the growing oil and gas business sector and government procurements, in Uganda.
