Kampala, 16th June 2020 - The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has certified thirteen (13) more companies to produce non-medical facemasks as of 16th June 2020, bringing the total number of certified non-medical facemasks manufactures to twenty-three (23).
This is in line with the UNBS mandate of consumer protection, aimed at protecting Ugandans from buying substandard non-medical facemasks which could be harmful to their health, in the wake of COVID-19.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is giving out free non-medical mask standards to aid certification of facemask manufacturers and mass production of non-medical facemasks that meet the national quality standards.

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) wishes to inform all importers that enforcement of the mandatory facemask and respiratory protective devices standards shall be applicable to all shipments with Bill of Lading date 8th June 2020 and thereafter. Importers are duly advised to communicate this to their suppliers and value chain partners.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, there is a huge demand for masks and it is important to ensure that appropriate masks provide adequate protection are swiftly made available to those who need them.

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has noted an increase in the number of sanitizers and liquid hand wash that are manufactured and sold on the Ugandan market some of which have not undergone any quality testing or certification.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has issued new standards for Facemasks and is calling upon facemask manufacturers to seek certification of their products to ensure that they meet the National quality standards.
UNBS approved three (3) facemask standards (specifications) and five (5) test methods for use, most especially now when the country is battling COVID-19.

To observe and comply with physical distancing recommended by Ministry of Health during COVID-19 Pandemic, Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) clients are advised to use the following procedures for buying standards.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is offering standards of sanitisers and disinfectants FREE OF CHARGE to manufacturers to help in the production of quality and safe products, in the wake of COVID-19.

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Executive Director, Dr. Ben Manyindo has called upon maize and bean suppliers in the country to embrace UNBS certification to ensure quality of their output.

Efforts to contain the coronavirus in Uganda have left many business owners and workers without a meal to eat as a result of lost income and wages due to the temporary closing of business operations. This prompted the Government of Uganda through the Office of the Prime Minister to begin distribution of relief food for the vulnerable population whose businesses and work places were closed during the lockdown. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) together with officials from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in charge of COVID19 relief food quality checks are working 7 days a week, to ensure that Ugandans get good quality food.
UNBS came on board on Easter Sunday and since then, the quality of all COVID19 relief food that comes through the OPM stores in Kinawataka has to first be checked and cleared by UNBS before its sent to the OPM office for distribution to the public.
