Metrology is the science of measurement. The Metrology Division of UNBS is divided into two sections: legal metrology; and industrial and scientific.
The role of the legal metrology section is to enforce the Weights and Measures Act 1963 with related amendments and subsidiary legislation. UNBS maintains 5 Regional offices Nationwide and are responsible for the verification of instruments used in trade. These include:
Counter Machines Spring Balance Platform Scales Weights (Class M2 and M3) Measures of Length Capacity Measures Dipsticks Weigh-Bridges Self-Indicating Machine
The Industrial Metrology Section maintains the highest standards of measurement in the country. It provides services to industry and scientific institution in the area of calibration through the following Laboratories:
Dimensional Laboratory Mass Laboratory Volume and flow Laboratory Density and Viscosity Laboratory Thermometry Laboratory Electrical Laboratory
Dimensional laboratory undertakes the following calibrations:
Meter bars Measuring tapes gauge blocks micrometer Venire calipers and dial gauges Surface texture and angle Depth and height gauges The mass laboratory undertakes the following calibrations:
Mass pieces up to Class E2 Weighing equipment up to class I
The volume and flow laboratory undertakes the following calibrations:
Pipettes
Burettes
Single Mark flasks
Graduated Cylinders
Prover tanks
Verification cans
Flow meters, ½” to 3”
Storage tanks, road and railway wagon tanks by use of the mobile calibration unit
The density and viscosity laboratory undertakes the following calibrations:
Viscometers
Density measurements
The thermometry laboratory undertakes the following calibrations
Mercury in glass thermometers
Thermocouple, Digital temperature indicators
Temperature gauges
Laboratory Ovens
Incubators
The Electrical Metrology laboratory handles matters of electrical measurements,
their accuracy, uncertainties and traceability to National and International
Standards.
The Electrical Metrology laboratory maintains National Standards for electrical
units of ac and dc measurements like Voltage, Current, Resistance, Capacitance,
Inductance, electrical energy and frequency.
Dissemination of units of measurement is effected through a traceable chain
of calibrations done on electrical instruments like multimeters, Voltmeters,
Ammeters, kWh-meters (energy meters), frequency meters, Thermocouples, Digital
temperature indicators, Oscilloscopes and others.
Calibration Certificates are issued for calibration done in the laboratory.
