PRE-VERIFICATION OF CONFORMITY (PVoC) INSPECTION AND TESTING OF USED MOTOR VEHICLES FOR ROAD WORTHINESS
- Thursday, 17 January 2013
Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) would like to inform our stakeholders that vehicle inspection and testing of used motor vehicles is undertaken according to the Standard US 845:2008. The standard specifies the safety related performance characteristics of used motor vehicles and their inspections and tests for roadworthiness. This standard can be accessed from UNBS information Resource Centre.
For performance characteristics, inspection is undertaken for steering wheel alignment, braking force, level of noise produced, exhaust gas from the vehicle, brightness of headlamps, the horn and the speedometer are inspected. For operational requirements, the engine, exhaust pipe, cooling system, fuel system, transmission system and suspension system, axles, wheels and tyres, etc are inspected.
Wheel alignment testing, brake testing, exhaust emission, headlight testing, sound level testing are undertaken in accordance with the standard. A road worthiness certificate issued by our PVoC Service Providers reflects the results of the inspection and testing as provided for in the standard.
UNBS is aware that used motor vehicles are sold in different grades. It is important that the appropriate grade that conforms to our Uganda Standard should be procured for Ugandan market. Procurement of a lower grade may lead to additional costs of repairs in order to meet the requirements of the standard.
Exporters of used motor vehicles to Uganda are advised to work with the PVoC Service Providers to minimize this additional cost to the importer.
